After the post “Steel and ISO standards” where we discussed about the standardization by the international organization ISO in products such as steel, we introduce below the main implications of the revision of the most widespread ISO standard: ISO 9001.
ISO standard 9001, chosen by most companies to certify their quality system, is intended to ensure compliance with the customer’s requirements and continuous improvement of the system
This standard is in constant evolution and has been revised several times since 1987. The most recent update is from 2015.
In the ISO 9001: 2015 version , the first change to take into account is the adaptation of the standard to the high level structure (HLS – High Level Structure).
This section shows a structure where different mandatory issues and common terms of obligatory use are indicated. The main objective is to facilitate the integration of the different management systems: ISO9001, ISO14001, ISO50001…
In the case of ISO 9001:2015 with the HSL the standard comes to have 10 points with respect to the 8 contained in the previous revision.
Regarding the content of the new ISO 9001:2015, the main changes compared to the previous version (2008), valid until September 2018, are:
- Context of the organization. It is the main change in the new content and requires to carry out an analysis of the organization, its context, external and internal issues, and interested parties directly related to the scope of the standard. This analisys should be done approaching risks and opportunities and planning the quality management system and setting a strategy in accordance with the quality policy.
- Leadership. The standard demands the leadership of senior management, as well as the commitment and involvement with the quality management system. To have a representative in the management is no longer applicable.
- Process-based approach. Risk-based thinking; Change management. They are concepts considerably reinforced in this new ISO9001:2015.
Other aspects such as knowledge of the organization, communicatipn, documented information or external provision have been reinforced to enhance the organization’s applicability in order to have an approach aligned with the the strategic planning and achieve a more efficient management system.
Having the customer as the main focus and with the aim of improving the level of service and efficiency, AUSA Special Steels has its quality management system certified under ISO9001:2015.
